New to Specialty Coffee? Start Here.

Welcome to Crema Peaks.

If you're new to specialty coffee or just curious about what makes it different, you're in the right place.

Not all coffee is created equal. This page is your starting point. No jargon. Just a clear path to better coffee.

Step 1: Understand What Specialty Coffee Actually Is

Specialty coffee isn't just a marketing term. It's a standard. Most coffee drinkers, like we were, are just used to commodity-grocery store coffee that has been on shelves for months before reaching the stores, and what we think is a bold coffee is normally over-roasted beans to mask underwhelming bean quality. But hey, we're just not educated to know these things. But, that's where we came from and now desire to help others truly experience great coffee with a story.

To be classified as specialty grade, coffee must score 80 points or above on a 100-point scale set by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). That means:

  • ✔ Carefully sourced from specific farms or regions
  • ✔ Harvested at peak ripeness
  • ✔ Processed with intention
  • ✔ Roasted to highlight — not mask — natural flavor

The result? Coffee that actually tastes like something. Chocolate. Fruit. Floral notes. Sweetness without sugar.

Step 2: Choose Your First Bag

Not sure where to start? Here's a simple guide:

If you like smooth, familiar, easy-drinking coffee:

👉 Start with a Dark Roast — rich, bold, and approachable.

If you want balance — not too bold, not too light:

👉 Try a Medium Roast — smooth body with more flavor complexity.

If you're ready to explore something unique:

👉 Go Single Origin — one farm, one region, one distinct flavor story.

If you love espresso:

👉 Explore our full coffee collection and look for espresso-friendly roast profiles.

Step 3: Brew It Right

Great beans deserve a great brew. You don't need expensive equipment — just a few basics:

  • Fresh beans — always. Stale coffee is the #1 flavor killer.
  • A burr grinder — even an entry-level one makes a big difference.
  • Filtered water at 195–205°F
  • The right ratio — a good starting point is 1:15 (coffee to water)

Step 4: Learn as You Go

The best way to develop your coffee palate is simply to pay attention as you drink.

Ask yourself:

  • Is it bitter or smooth?
  • Does it taste bright and fruity, or deep and chocolatey?
  • Does it need anything added — or is it great on its own?

Over time, you'll start to notice the difference between origins, roast levels, and brew methods.
